House Manager Job Description

The House Manager is a strong evangelical Christian who supports coordination of a client's daily programming that helps individuals and families transition from homelessness to stable housing. They support the program’s supportive, trauma-informed environment and meet all agency standards.

The House Manager supports daily program operations and client-centered supportive services. The goal is to facilitate client self-sufficiency by helping them develop effective daily habits and essential life skills. The role requires strong leadership, administrative, and interpersonal skills, and an understanding of the complexities of homelessness.

Program Oversight and Administration

  • Operational management: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the transitional housing program to support effectiveness and safety. Assist in preparing for new and existing program participants.

  • Budget and reporting: Track program expenditures and work with the Executive Director to manage the program budget. Prepare and submit all required program reports and data.

  • Recordkeeping: Maintain accurate and confidential client files, file required documentation, and keep wish-list and donation-item records up to date.

Client Services

  • Crisis intervention: Provide ongoing support and crisis intervention as needed. Offer clients a supportive, nonjudgmental environment.

  • Client advocacy: Ensure clients receive appropriate support and connections to internal and external resources for employment, education, healthcare, housing, and financial assistance.

  • Life-skills development: Support clients in developing essential skills such as budgeting, job searching, and apartment maintenance through one-on-one coaching and group sessions.

  • Household safety: Identify household repairs, needed updates, and safety concerns.

Client Support

  • Provide loving, motherly leadership to the mothers and their children while effectively managing the home.

  • Support residents as they plan and carry out their daily routines, vocational and educational appointments, activities, and other responsibilities.

  • Ensure that mothers attend weekly and monthly programs, including Bible study and other programs.

  • Complete assigned tasks, and delegate and supervise others to support the effective operation of the home.

  • Work with other staff members to provide comprehensive support for residents.

  • Encourage women to attend church on Sundays.

  • Represent the organization as instructed.

  • Maintain confidentiality and protect the rights and privacy of all people served.

  • Connect women with food banks and other community resources.

Daily Household Management

  • Manage the kitchen and the cooking and cleaning schedules.

  • Help clients develop grocery lists and meal plans.

  • Shop for meals planned by program participants.

  • Ensure sanitary conditions are maintained in and around the house and that personal health and hygiene standards are upheld.

  • Ensure the laundry schedule is followed and laundry is completed on time.

  • Ensure rooms are kept clean and conduct random room checks.

  • Help clients with schoolwork or job searches as needed.

  • Support residents in self-managing their prescribed medications, encourage adherence to prescribed treatment, and document medication-related observations as appropriate.

  • Receive a weekly list of needs from each mother, then retrieve and deliver available donated items.

  • Be available to have dinner with program participants once a week.

  • Keep the calendar up to date.

  • Maintain an inventory of donated items.

  • Work closely with the Program Care Manager.

  • Work with volunteers.

  • Identify household repairs, needed updates, and safety concerns.

  • Help prepare rooms for participants entering and exiting the program.

  • Create and maintain a current wish list.

  • Maintain financial records of spending.

  • Issue warnings or written notices to participants when necessary.

Qualifications

Education

  • A degree or certification is preferred but not required.

Experience

  • Three to five years of experience in the human services sector.

  • Two to three years of supervisory or program management experience.

  • Experience working with vulnerable populations, including people affected by substance use, mental health concerns, and trauma-related issues, is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Housing models: Strong knowledge of best practices such as Housing First, harm reduction, and trauma-informed care.

  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Leadership and management: Strong supervisory, organizational, and team-building skills.

  • Technology: Proficiency with Google tools.

  • Crisis management: Ability to de-escalate situations, manage crises effectively, and remain calm under pressure.

  • Cultural competence: Demonstrated ability to work with and appreciate diverse populations.

  • Organization: Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain detailed records.

Additional Requirements

  • Mature evangelical Christian.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain valid CPR and First Aid certification.

  • Excellent spoken and written English-language skills.

  • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

  • Willingness to be on call for emergencies.

  • Spanish-language skills are a plus but are not required.

  • Ability to climb stairs and lift 25 pounds.
