House Mother Job Description

Ruth’s House is looking for someone who wants to make a measurable and meaningful impact on the lives of single mothers and children in the community. The House Mother is responsible for the day-to-day operations and supervision of the residents. The House Mother will help provide training, education, support, and leadership and guidance to the residents to assist them with daily activities and help promote and empower these individuals to experience life with confidence and dignity.

In addition, the House Mother will offer spiritual and emotional support to our mothers and their little ones. The house mother manages every aspect of the home, creating a loving environment for the moms and their children. She helps them develop godly character by modeling it. This includes loving, caring, affirming, and healthy grace-centered discipline when needed. 

The House Mother of Ruth’s House is a highly motivated and experienced individual who has the vision and passion to pour into single moms and their children and to see them thrive and achieve their God-given potential and calling in life. It is somebody who is growth-minded, loves to learn and grow, and is able to model that persistent, tireless learning spirit to those in the home. 

She reports directly to the President of Ruth’s House. This is a live-in position, five days a week from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Qualifications

Education, Skills, Experience 

  • Mature evangelical Christian 

  • Obtain and maintain valid CPR and First Aid Certification 

  • Excellent spoken and written English language skills

  • Must have a valid driver’s license

  • Excellent leadership, prioritization, and time management skills 

  • Degree or Certification helpful, but not required

  • Ability to speak Spanish a plus, but not required

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide loving motherly leadership to the moms and their children and the effective management of the home

  • Support the residents’ efforts to plan and carry out their daily routine, vocational/educational appointments, and activities, etc. 

  • Ensure that mothers attend their weekly and monthly programs (Bible study and other programs)

  • Perform some tasks and delegate and supervise others to ensure the effective operation of the home.

  • Encourage women to attend church on Sundays

  • Lead devotion and prayer at the start of the day and prayer at the end of the day.

  • Represent the organization as instructed.

  • Establish a good working relationship with local community volunteers

  • Maintain confidentiality to protect the rights and privacy of all persons served

  • Complete other duties as assigned

Manage the Home

The House Mother will maintain a clean, safe, organized home by:

  • Managing the kitchen, cooking, and cleaning schedule

  • Creating food lists and meal plans

  • Ensuring that all maintain sanitary conditions in and around the house, and personally maintain health and hygiene

  • Ensuring that moms are up by 7:00 a.m. and in rooms by lights out at 10 p.m.

  • Ensuring that the laundry schedule is maintained and is done on time

  • Ensuring that rooms are kept clean

  • Helping residents with schoolwork or job search as needed

  • Keeping any financial records associated with purchases for the home including but not limited to food, medical bills, utility bills, and other home needs

  • Identifying household repair problems. If there is a major problem, such as no heat, you would immediately call the appropriate repair service number so prompt corrective action can be taken. The numbers to call should be displayed inside a kitchen cabinet.

  • Supervising medication administration for all residents; guarantee medications are stored, dispensed, and disposed of properly in compliance with CT state guidelines

Physical Requirements: 

Physical ability to lift/carry 25+ lbs. and climb stairs
